Our Team
This heritage project is initiated by a group of young researchers from diverse backgrounds covering both tourism and business marketing. The team made of up Dr. Teh (Project Leader), Dr Teoh, Dr Derek Ong & Dr Daniel Chong, believes in active engagement with the community for research to have meaning, substance and benefit in the 21st century.
The I.P.O.H Project is initiated by four team members, Dr. Teh Pek Yen, Dr Teoh Chai Wen, Assoc. Prof. Dr Derek Ong and Assoc. Prof. Dr Daniel Chong from Sunway University, each with years of experiences in research and teaching from both tourism and business marketing disciplines.

Teh Pek Yen, PhD (in Tourism Studies)
Dr Teh Pek Yen joined as the academic in 2014 and is currently teaching tourism and events related subjects in Sunway University. She obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (in Tourism) from University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2017. During her course of postgraduate studies, she was selected to carry out her internship with the Malaysian Embassy in Republic of Korea (MATRADE) and was awarded the Taiwan Fellowship by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) as research fellow with the National Taiwan Normal University. On top of that, she has rich experiences in field research, particular research interest in sustainable & responsible tourism, conservation and preservation, film-induced tourism and destination marketing.

Currently, she is conducting few major projects, mainly focus on film-induced tourism (Muslim travelers), craftsmanship conservation project in Ipoh and revitalizing fishing village in Sungai Lima. To get to know more about her, feel free to reach out at LinkedIn.
Derek Ong Lai Teik, PhD
Derek Ong is currently an Associate Professor in Marketing, Sunway University Business School Prior to acadamia, he has worked in banking and market research industry. He has presented papers in both local and international conferences and published in high ranked international marketing journals.
Derek is a Chartered Statistician, Chartered Scientist and a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society of UK. Recently his research interest has turned more towards Social Marketing where he believes in research led social positive impact creation.
Teoh Chai Wen, PhD (Marketing)
Chai Wen joined Sunway University as academia in 2016 as Lecturer in Marketing. In the same year, she received her doctoral degree from University Utara Malaysia. Prior to her current engagement, she has since worked in manufacturing and construction sectors. She loves to share her knowledge and help students develop relevant and necessary skills for a competitive industry. She had published in international refereed ranked journals and serve as reviewers for government grants, journals and conferences as well guest co-editor for international journal.
Chai Wen is an Associate Member for the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and Affiliate Member for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Currently, her research is focusing in the area of sustainable consumption that encourage behavioral changes and social media marketing. She believes in the ethos that education is vital in shaping one’s future coupled with up to date research could solve today's industry problems.
Daniel Chong Ka Leong, PhD
Dr Daniel Chong is an Associate Professor cum Associate Dean (Education) with over 15 years of experience in hospitality training and education. He has a French degree in tourism and hospitality, an Australian Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a PHD in services branding under his belt. He also recently became a Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT®) by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI).
Besides teaching, Dr Daniel is also actively involved in research and has published research articles pertaining to the sustainable practices, challenges and opportunities faced by the tourism, hospitality and food industry in Asia. He is also a member of the Asia Pacific Tourism Association (APTA) and Tourism Educators Association of Malaysia (TEAM). Prior to being an academic, he has worked in the F&B industry as an operation manager, F&B consultant, and training manager at various multinational hotel groups, multinational franchised restaurants, and a hospitality consulting firm.
