“This job is really hard. You can’t just sit back and direct others. You have to work hands-on to see results.”

The Hainan Kopitiam Masters

Mr. and Mrs. Chong are the proud owners of Dong Hai Kopitiam (东海茶室), located on Hugh Low Street, in the heart of Ipoh’s New Town. This kopitiam has been in operation for over 60 years, having first opened its doors in 1959. Known for its traditional Hainanese offerings—tea, coffee, kaya, toast, and Hainanese pastries like steamed sponge egg cake (鸡蛋糕)—Dong Hai quickly became the neighbourhood favourite thanks to its authentic recipes. More than just a business, it served as a social hub for the neighbourhood. Originally established by Mrs. Chong's grandfather, it was one of the earliest Hainanese-run kopitiams in Ipoh.

Mrs. Chong recalls that her grandfather was the driving force behind the business, while her father, a school principal, frequently helped out on weekends. However, as her grandfather aged and his health deteriorated, managing the kopitiam became increasingly difficult. “He often made mistakes with the daily tasks,” Mrs. Chong shared. After his passing, the family decided to lease out the business. But in a pivotal moment for the kopitiam’s history, Mr. and Mrs. Chong chose to reclaim the family legacy and continue the tradition, marking the third generation of ownership.

Running a traditional kopitiam in modern times comes with its own set of challenges. Changing tastes, especially among younger generations who seek more contemporary dining experiences, have affected business. However, Mr. Chong perceives this shift as an opportunity. “People love nostalgia” he said, expressing hope that customers will continue to appreciate the charm and authenticity of Hainanese delicacies. Running the kopitiam is no easy task, as Mr. Chong noted: “This job is really hard. You can’t just sit back and direct others. You have to work hands-on to see results.” The couple takes great pride in their homemade kaya and steamed egg sponge cake, made from their grandmother’s secret recipe. Mrs. Chong emphasised that beyond the recipe, the real key to success lies in the skill of preparation—an intangible craftsmanship honed through years of experience.

Despite the challenges, the Chong family remains dedicated to preserving the authenticity and heritage of Dong Hai Kopitiam. Mrs. Chong shared that the kopitiam holds countless memories, having been a part of her life since her grandfather’s time. To the Chong family, Dong Hai Kopitiam is more than just a business—it has raised and sustained three generations. It serves as a cornerstone of family togetherness and an intellectual inheritance passed down through the generations.
